New this quarter, Edge Himmel Park is piloting three free online Junior Achievement (JA) courses as part of our Wednesday electives. Based on the interest and feedback that we’ve already received we hope to expand Junior Achievement courses to our Northwest campus by the second quarter.
What is Junior Achievement?
JA is an organization that partners with schools to help students be financially capable and prepared to succeed in the work world. JA’s local volunteer mentors teach about the importance of money management, work readiness and entrepreneurial thinking. They also help you connect what you learn in the classroom to experiences you will have in your career after high school. And the results are pretty impressive!
- JA students are 54% more likely to have their bachelor’s degree than the general population
- JA students earn 20% more than the general population
- 4 in 5 JA alumni say JA played an important role in their belief that they could achieve their goals
Ready to get started?
This fall we are offering three different JA courses as part of Wednesday Electives at our Himmel Park campus:
JA Inspire
Start your career journey here! Edge teachers will guide you through assessments to find out how your hobbies and skills can translate into successful career choices. Then JA will help you explore those choices by connecting you with local adults working in careers that interest you. You’ll learn about what skills and education are required to be successful, and even try out equipment or tools that are used on the job. All course components will be conducted virtually.
JA Be Entrepreneurial (Creative Problem Solving)
Learn about the mindset and the skills needed for success, taught by successful entrepreneurs and innovators in our community. You’ll develop a new product by applying “design thinking” – an innovative process for problem solving used by entrepreneurs. Through trial and error, we’ll test and retest ideas to learn how mistakes can lead to solutions – in life and in business. This class will feature in-person and online instruction.
Are you wondering how to get and keep a job in today’s world? Learn the tools required to find your perfect job, including resumes, cover letters, and interviewing techniques. We’ll also cover skills that help you keep your job – including conflict resolution, business writing, and more. For seniors who are getting ready to graduate, Edge Advisor Darryl Cornell’s senior advisory class hosts guest speakers from our local business community to answer questions and talk about their real-life work experiences. This class features virtual and in-person learning.
