Sahuarita Edge Kiva Microlending Project

Following in the footsteps of the Himmel Park Campus, Sahuarita Edge recently entered the microlending market to help empower the less fortunate members of our global community. Students have donated and raised money to lend to the recepients of their choice while spending time researching the countries in which these people live. Kiva is a non-profit organization that allows philanthropic-minded people to gain access to aspiring entrepreneurs in impoverished countries worldwide. To view our current list of recipients checkout the Sahuarita Edge Lending Page. For more information on this project visit Edge's Student Service Learning section.

Matt Latimer (left) chose Christopher Okumu

I selected this man mainly because he is a father of six, working hard to keep his children in school. He also provides a job to one additional employee in his community. The use of his fertilizers may help prevent long term desertification of the Kenyan countryside.

Claire Kennedy (right) chose Malahat Kazimova

Malahat was an interesting choice because she lives in a country that has been in a 15 year conflict with neighboring Armenia. This conflict has brought over a half million displaced persons to Azerbaijan. She owns a furniture store in a small town that has seen a large increase in population and these people need home furnishings to live comfortably.

Jose Samaniego (left) chose Chay Sina

Chay seemed to me to come from a very hard-working family. Her husband works as a taxi driver and one of her children works in a local garment factory. They must support her other two children who are still in school. She has endured conflicts, including over fifteen years of civil war, for most of her life in Cambodia.

Kerrie Coultas (right) chose Margaret Adhiambo

As is often the case the money needed by Margaret was raised by the time Kerrie had finished her research. This is good news but will mean that we must choose another recipient and when you look back next week that person will have been selected!
