Assignment

Let's now look at the process of crime scene investigation. Read Collecting Evidence and try to imagine what in this process would interest you. Write a brief summary that decribes the specialty department that interests you most. Include what it is specifically that you would want to do and what kind of training or education you might need to perform this duty. Finally, you arrive on the scene as the only investigator and must conduct a search. What search method might work well in this situation?

Now let's look again at the many different types of evidence that can be found at a typical crime scene. Answer the following questions based on the Evidence article by George Schiro.

What evidence should be collected first at a crime scene?

Why should more time be spent trying to get good fingerprint impressions rather than finding fibers or footprints at a crime scene?

Take the list of evidence items from the article and rank them from 1 to 12 in importance to solving a crime. For the first three items explain why you think they are most important.

As with any new technology methods of testing will become more advanced and in most cases more accurate. Read the paragraph on PCR Analysis and explain the difference between this type of testing versus the RFLP method.

Now just look at the amount of basic Equipment that is needed in the Crime Scene Investigative field. As you can imagine it would take quite some time to be proficient in using many of the items mentioned on this page.
