Life Skills
Edge HS is very proud of its life skills collaborations with the Teen Outreach Pregnancy Services ( TOPS ) , Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault ( SACASA ) and Kino Teen Center. Thanks to a $ 10,000.grant from Every Voice in Action Foundation, our life skills program has been able to continue to present quality education in the areas of pregnancy prevention, the promotion of healthy relationships, good decision making and the prevention of sexual violence.
Edge HS has been building a career program for our students over the years. In the last two years, we have had 50 local companies visit our students to talk about preparing for the world of work. This year all of our students have begun to create career portfolios with career assessments, volunteer work, present work experience, shadowing, mentorships and internships with area businesses. This year we have continued the practice of career Wednesdays with the following area organizations:
UA Genotype Lab, Texas Instruments, Granite Construction, Bombardier Aeronautics, Youth Volunteer Corps, Convergys Call Centers, Wells Fargo Bank, Job Path, Department of Public Safety, Tucson Clean and Beautiful, Fry’s Foods
We have been able to build on our career presentations by arranging job shadowing activities at two area hospitals. Five of our students visited the Radiology department and the Laboratories at Tucson Medical Center and eight of our Future Nurses participated in a one on one shadowing with University medical center nurses and patient care technicians.
Career Wednesdays will continue throughout the spring featuring large Tucson employers, the University of Arizona and Tucson Electric and shadowing opportunities will be available as well. It is our hope that the students of Edge HS will be well prepared for the transition from secondary school to higher education, training and the career world.
